INTRODUCTION TO JULY DEVOTIONS
FREEDOM TO CHOOSE
I always assumed I was free if not equal I attended an all black elementary school until the fifth grade. Linda Brown of Brown vs the Topeka Board of Education, the landmark case that integrated schools, was a classmate of mine. My mother’s response to segregation was to encourage no, demand that I study as hard as I could and conduct myself in ways that would dispel the stereotypes that helped divide the races.
Perhaps I was a slave As an adult, I encountered other experiences that caused me to feel enslaved in addition to the racial discrimination I experienced. Whatever the situation, whether I was being held captive by my own actions or the actions of others, I felt anything but free.
…to the wrong master Fortunately I came to realize that GOD was available and willing to set me free again and again. I had to remind myself that in fact I was already free. JESUS, had paid the price for my freedom, forgiven me, and wiped the incident from HIS memory. We are free to put on the bonds of slavery, and we are free to take them off at any time. GOD’S actions of love give us the Freedom to choose.
I pray that you will find this month’s Scriptures and faith stories helpful in identifying the things in life which enslave and the freeing power of JESUS CHRIST. What will you do with your freedom? You are free to choose.
The promise of HIS everlasting love for you and for me…“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” II Corinthians 5: 17
