LIVING WITH THE END IN MIND
“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1
I was having trouble coming up with a clear-cut theme for the month of May. Since we celebrate Memorial Day during this month, I wanted to include faith stories about honoring our dead. But I also wanted to write about life and death and the hope we as believers cling to through the resurrection of JESUS CHRIST. And I wanted to write about choices we make in life that influence how we are remembered when we die. Suddenly a scripture came to mind, Ecclesiastes 3:1. I turned to my Bible and as I read the first verse, my eyes continued on through verse 9. Those verses represent a lot of living before we die. No wonder I was having so much trouble coming up with a theme and basic outline.
Perhaps my difficulty in developing this month’s topic is indicative of the difficult issues life embraces, issues that take courage to face like love and hate, war and peace, death and dying, illness and suffering, grief and sorrow.
I pray that as you read the Scriptures and the faith stories you will gain a greater understanding-HIS understanding-about the mysteries of life and death. Perhaps you will be moved to live each day with the end in mind. Today we can choose to live CHRIST-like lives. We cannot count on what we will do tomorrow, for tomorrow is not promised to any of us. So supported by GOD’S Holy Word and our brothers and sisters in CHRIST, let us do our loving, giving, mourning, and forgiving TODAY!
